 | 41 For Freedom If the phrase "40 for Freedom, 1 for Training" means anything to you, then you played a key role in winning the cold war. These 41 boats and the men who crewed them were instrumental in making sure the Cold War stayed cold and didn't heat up. For 3 decades, the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's, these boats and the men who sailed them kept the Soviet Union at bay. They completed their mission without having to fire a shot in anger. Their contribution must never be forgotten! The 41 are gone now, replaced by the Ohio class boats, but not forgotten. I had the privilege of serving aboard the USS Andrew Jackson SSBN 619G and making 6 deterrent patrols. |
